TAPs are user written software modules which are copied onto the Topfield and provide functionality above and beyond the software provided with the box. Below is a list of my favourite TAPs, some of which I regard as essential, while others simply sprinkle some occasional fun on to the Toppy experience. New TAPs are being written all the time and existing TAPs are being improved, which means the Toppy is continually evolving. To see the details for each TAP, simply click on the header.
This is fast becoming the TAP to beat all TAPs. It provides a grid style EPG which can contain program data with full program descriptions for up to 14 days (cancel that subscription to the TV Times now). It also provides Now & Next functionality (configurable up to 14 shows ahead), which basically gives you an alternative form of EPG listed by channel. You can browse upcoming programs on any channel without changing the channel you are on. Intuitive, easy to use (based on Sky+ interface), and attractive to boot, this TAP makes navigating the TV listings a breeze. If you wish to record a program, simply highlight it in the guide, and press record. Easy as that.
If you are a music lover, then installing this is a no brainer. The best MP3 TAP by a country mile. Simply load your entire MP3 collection on to the Toppy and away you go. It enables you to play your MP3s randomly, create your own playlists, or listen to an album as you would a CD.
This TAP offers a super charged replacement to the standard Picture in Picture functionality. It displays a large window with the current program in it in the top right, and a small window with any other channel you want in the bottom left. As well as this it has a window in the top left with a mini EPG which lets you choose the channel you want in the bottom left, and finally in the bottom right of the screen is the details of the program in the bottom left (including any extended information). It is also possible to navigate forward in the mini EPG to see what is on later on any channel. This really is a fully featured must have TAP.
UK Timers replaces the standard (and rather poor) timers screen. You can browse timers for any day of the week, or see all timers in one screen. You can create or edit existing timers in any way you wish. The look and feel is the same as all the UK Project TAPs. This provides a greatly improved interface to the timers and is highly recommended.
Another great effort from the UK Project team, this TAP replaces the existing file list interface. It lets you configure how your recordings are displayed, including a neat feature to hide any unwanted endings to the file name such as dates or numbers. It can display progress bars to indicate how much of a program you have watched or has been recorded. If a program has been part watched, it can be started again from where you left off. You can also edit the recording name, using a natty onscreen keyboard which can be used SMS style with the number keys.
